Discover how My Garden Design completely reimagined this steeply sloping back garden on behalf of our clients at Assured Landscapes

The Client

Assured Landscapes is a Surrey based landscaping company founded in 2011 by MD Russell Eales.  Russell and his team provide bespoke landscaping projects for corporate and domestic customers. A trained greenskeeper, Russell now specialises in artificial grass installation.

The Design Brief

This moderately sized back garden has a rather unusual – and challenging – topographical feature.  The area closest to the house is unremarkable. Nice and level and laid to artificial lawn.  This very usable area leads to a tall retaining wall in front of a very steep and currently inaccessible slope.

Russell’s client would like to be able to make use of the sloped area.

What’s on the homeowner’s wish list?

  • Contemporary styling
  • Space for outdoor eating
  • Room for a free standing barbecue
  • Relaxed ambience
  • New fencing consistent with the neighbouring garden
  • Artificial lawn to remain
  • No particular preference for planting style
  • Open to ideas for surfacing

Design for Steeply Sloping Garden

The designers at My Garden Design enjoy a challenge and this project is certainly out of the ordinary.

We started at the house property and considered the narrow side return which is currently laid to artificial grass.  Our designer has suggested paving this area and continuing the paving so that it wraps around the back of the house in a relatively narrow strip.  This will give a nice crisp edge to the artificial grass lawn.

A paving plank path leads the eye (and the garden visitor) towards a floating step which gives access to the sloped area.

The slope to be re-contoured to create a generous decked dining area part way up and a gravelled path and seating area at the highest level.  The dining deck has space for a free standing barbecue and a small food preparation area.

Steps link each area and generous mixed planting softens the hard landscaping and creates a feeling of seclusion.  Our designer has suggested planting two feature trees. One to shade the dining deck and one to add interest to the view from within the house.
