G W Landscapes : Front Garden Layout And Planting Plan

It’s not often these days that we have the pleasure of designing a garden for someone who is a keen gardener. But this is just what G W Landscapes Design and Build commissioned My Garden Design to do on their behalf.
This is a layout plan and planting design for a slightly sloping front garden that will be a joy to look at and to work in.
The Client
GW Landscapes Design and Build are based in West Sussex where they have a strong reputation for building beautiful gardens to a very high standard. For this project, the team were pressed for time and so outsourced the design and planting plan to ensure a speedy delivery.
The Garden Design Brief
This front garden looks like every other front garden on the street – a patch of grass and a driveway. The soil is heavy clay and the garden faces North which GW Landscapes Design and Build were commissioned to make this garden stand out from the crowd so that it will be a pleasure to look at and to work in.
The householders have passed their first flush of youth and whilst they love gardening, they want their plot to be easy to tend. No heavy digging, just some therapeutic weeding, deadheading and tidying. They already had some ideas about a possible shape for their lawn and for the position of a path to access the side entrance to their home. Other than than, they were open to suggestions.
A Front Garden For A Gardener
Our design incorporates a nice level figure of 8 shaped lawn edged with brick pavers. This will be easy for the householders to mow and maintain but at the same time gives a strong and distinctive garden layout. It will look fabulous from ground level but also when viewed from an upstairs window.
The garden slopes by some 600mm from the road to the house. Our designer has overcome this by including some elegantly curved steps from the path to the level of the lawn. There is still, however, easy access from the driveway for a gardener with a mower.
The planting plan is exquisite, even if I do say so myself. Highly attractive to bees and butterflies with wonderfully scented plants for visitors to brush past as they enter the garden. Photinia hedging provides rich colour all year round and is complemented by a beautiful flowering cherry tree underplanted with ornamental grasses and herbaceous perennials.
