The Client
This rear garden design was created on behalf of Hugh Gunn of Gunns and Roses, a highly acclaimed landscaping company from Bourne in South Lincolnshire
The Design Brief
Hugh’s client has a spacious home with mid-sized rear garden. The house has an interesting profile with two extensions jutting into the garden to create a shape with lots of angles.
The client brief calls for a family garden with space for entertaining and plenty of points of interest. Plants are important to this family. They’ve asked for a natural lawn and well stocked borders. The idea of a Mediterranean themed garden appeals to them strongly.
The Rear Garden Design
Our designers have created a layout which celebrates the shape of this garden and turns those angles into a series of delightful features.
Attractive smokey grey paving, embraces the building. On one side of the garden, the paving morphs into parallel paths which lead visitors to a raised deck area. A beautiful pergola provides shade for bespoke made seating. We’ve designed seats where the back of the seat doubles as a planter.
There are two rectangular lawns. The smaller of the pair is home to a raised water feature. It’s big enough to fill the garden with the sound of burbling water, but safe for the children to play around.
Embedded into the patio are areas of generous planting. These break up and soften the expanse of paving. There are also generous planting beds around the perimeter of the plot.
A raised bed between the patio and the decking is home to an olive tree, in keeping with the mediterranean theme. Pleached trees and painted softwood fencing form the boundary between this garden and neighbouring land.
Naturally, we’ve included an outdoor cooking area. And tucked away to the side of the property is a utility area. A place where bins etc can be stored without spoiling the look of the garden.
Materials
Hugh asked us to suggest materials that will create the perfect ambience in this rear garden design. We’ve gone for a light grey coloured porcelain paving and composite decking with a limed oak effect. These materials, have a wonderful sun kissed appearance – reminiscent of a mediterranean terrace.
Quercus ilex would be ideal as the pleached trees. It’s evergreen and will generate a sense of warmth in the winter and coolness in summer. Just perfect for an all year round garden.
