Gunns and Roses: Dog Friendly Garden Design

A mid sized, dog friendly, back garden for people and pets to enjoy together

The Client

Gunns and Roses is an APL member from Spalding in Lincolnshire who works throughout Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Rutland, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.  Hugh Gunn is a regular My Garden Design client and has built several gardens based on our designs.

The garden design brief

Hugh’s clients love spending time in their garden and asked him to create an exciting space with plenty of interest for wildlife and for their standard poodles.

This garden is to carry Hugh’s clients through into their retirement, and whilst they love growing their own veg, they realise that they may find bending more difficult as they age. And so they have asked for raised beds for food growing.  Their existing storage shed is to remain on site, as is their mature apple tree.

One of the clients loves to bask in the sunshine, the other prefers to sit in the shade and so a seating area that meets both of their needs is a big part of the brief.

They’d like a dog friendly garden in a traditional style with lots of planting, space for a freestanding barbecue, informal curves and an artificial lawn that can withstand the wear and tear from their very active pooches.

Dog friendly garden design

The designers at My Garden Design approached this project with great gusto.  The garden is an unusual shape which really stretches the creative muscles.

We’ve designed a central lawn which is hugged by planted areas in several different styles. There’s a rockery, a rose garden and ornamental grasses which will provide a sensory experience for the dogs.

One one side of the lawn is a curved path which winds its way down the garden, through luxuriously planted areas to an arbour seat. And from there it leads to a secret gate into another part of the garden.

A semi-circular patio at the top of the garden is perfectly placed to catch the morning sun. And it mirrors the shape of the main patio beside the house. Finally, a series of four raised beds allow for crop rotation in the veg patch and sit conveniently close to the outdoor tap.
