MCS Landscaping: Large Back Garden With Countryside Views
The Client
MCS Landscaping is a regular client of My Garden Design. Based in the West Midlands, Mark and his team offer a full garden design and build service. Including hard landscaping, soft landscaping, water features and planting design.
The garden design brief
This garden had some unique design challenges. First of all, the build budget was capped at £25K – which is a decent budget, but this is quite a large garden at approximately 312 square metres.
Secondly, the garden needs to be a save haven for both of the homeowners’ young sons. One of whom has autism.
The client loves entertaining and has been known to host large parties in the garden. They would like a paved dining area big enough to seat 5-10 people. They also suggested including some raised beds that can double up as “perches” for when there are larger gatherings.
Two patios are on the wish list. One close to the house to replace the existing (rather tired) slabs with a similar sized one to the left that sits under a pergola for privacy. The main patio will be used for children’s play and for a large dining table. The second patio will be a tranquil, relaxed area with sofa type seating.
The sheds are to remain but possibly with some screening to improve the sightline from the kitchen window. The clients also like the idea of a water feature – something that their children can safely engage with.
The garden design
The design for this garden incorporates the two patios as requested but also features a sturdy gravel path that leads visitors on a journey right around the garden. A small seating area sits at the far end of the garden and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the views across surrounding countryside.
A large ornamental lawn provides a feeling of space and provides plenty of room for children’s active play. At the far end of the lawn, a trampoline is sunk into the ground and surrounded by sensory planting.
As the gravel path returns to the main patio, stepping stones are introduced to help the path blend with the paving beyond.
Trellis work, adorned with climbing plants provides soft screening for the sheds without the solidity of fencing.
The design is pulled together with low maintenance sensory planting to suit the clients maintenance requirements, taste and budget.
