MCS Landscaping: Terraced Family Garden
The Client
MCS Landscaping is a landscaping company working in and around Solihull in the West Midlands. James and his team offer a garden design and build service which is promoted via their website. This project was the first garden design that James outsourced to My Garden Design.
The Design Brief
A mid-sized detached house Rugby, Warwickshire with a well proportioned garden. This is a family home, build on a modern housing estate.
The garden itself wraps around the family’s garage which means there is a dog-leg towards the end of the garden. James’ site analysis reports some drainage issues which would need to be addressed by the design. This is a slightly undulating site with the garden sloping towards the house.
James’ clients requested a family friendly garden that accommodates the needs of young children as well as adults. They want plenty of space to relax and to entertain family and friends. Ideally, garden maintenance would be kept simple. The clients are happy to mow the lawn and don’t mind occasional weeding but their busy lifestyle doesn’t allow much time for gardening.
Their landscaping budget is quite generous and allows for some re-contouring and the use of a good range of landscaping materials to be used.
The Design
Our designer has created five distinctive “zones” within the garden and used changes in levels to differentiate the areas.
Adjacent to the house is a large patio with plenty of room for a dining set and sun loungers. This is bordered by a raised sleeper wall that can double up as extra seating. A set of steps, leads up to a natural lawn with a sunken trampoline in plain view of the kitchen window.
A second sleeper wall leads to a pretty terrace which is divided into a play zone for the children and an area of decking for the adults. Artificial grass has been suggested for the play zone as it won’t object to having toys left on it overnight. The decking is surrounded by timber trellis swathed in scented jasmine for a more intimate, secluded feel.
A specimen tree creates a focal point at the end of the garden and the whole is bordered by planting with all year round interest.
