Greenspace Landscapes: Newbuild Planting Plan

Every landscaper knows the joy of having a the blank canvas of a newbuild garden to work with. Our client needed planting suggestions to bring life to this boring back garden in Cassidy Wynd near Edinburgh.
The Client
Greenspace Landscapes is an Edinburgh based landscaping company who specialise in creating attractive gardens with beautiful planting.
The planting plan brief
Ruairidh MacDonald from Greenspace Landscapes asked the My Garden Design team to create a planting plan for this 270 square metre new build garden. There are plans to build a new summerhouse d in the garden along with a water feature.
The homeowners have asked for an evergreen hedge along the fence line furthest from the house and they also want a 4 seater patio. Ruairidh briefed MGD on where the summer house, patio and water feature will be sited.
Planting plan is required for a long border, approximately 2.5 metres wide, which hugs the fenceline. We were asked to aim for all year round colour as well as considering the needs (and habits) of the homeowner’s husky puppy – who apparently loves to dig in the garden.
Newbuild Garden Planting Plan
With no existing plants or trees to consider, our designers have opted to specify plants that are easy to establish and will quickly fill the space.
For the evergreen hedge, our designers recommended Griselinia Literatis. It’s a relatively quick growing shrub that is largely untroubled by pests and diseases. This species forms a narrow hedge that will hide the fence without encroaching too far into the garden.
The planted borders are generously filled with a range of shrubs and herbaceous perennials. The mix offers summer colour and winter structure through foliage and flowers. Summer flowers are mainly in shades of pink, blue and white to create a cool, relaxing ambience.
This planting plan will quickly bring a sense of maturity to this newbuild garden.
