Case Study: A Garden On Two Levels

 In Case studies

A detailed look at a recent commission for the My Garden Design team. A garden on two levels.

It’s not uncommon for the My Garden Design team to be asked to design gardens for sloping gardens.  But this particular plot is nothing like we’ve ever designed before. And, it’s beautiful! Situated  on the edge of a housing development, this garden has incredible views across to the hills of Cathkin Braes.

Our clients for this project were Murray Landscapes from Motherwell. A well respected landscaping business with four teams of landscapers offering design, build and maintenance services.  Owner Marc Murray commissioned this garden design and I have to say, we really enjoyed working with him.

The Design Brief For This Garden On Two Levels

As you can see from the pictures, this is an unusually shaped garden on two levels.  An existing retaining wall snakes from one side of the garden to the other.

Marc’s clients asked for a garden design that would enable them to enjoy ALL of the garden – even the upper terrace which currently hidden behind a wooden fence. The garden is North Facing but Marc’s clients want to see as much sunshine as possible.  Which means that the design needs to make the most of any available sunny spots.

As far as styling and maintenance are concerted, porcelain paving would be the homeowners first choice of material. He asked for contemporary styling with a minimalist look and feel. Also on his wish list is a garden room with a terrace for a hot tub.

garden layout plan for a curved garden on two levels

We’re really proud of our designer’s work on this project. The layout plan embraces the contours of the garden and turns them into a stunning feature.

Let’s start at the house and work our way around this beautiful plan.

Beside the house, in the most secluded part of the garden, is a stylish garden room. In front of it is a raised composite decking area which can be used for relaxing and entertainment.  It’s ideally placed for a hot tub and could also house a sound system and/or outdoor cinema screen.

Stepping down from the deck, we find ourselves on a large paved area. There’s room here for comfy sofa’s and a dining table and chairs. The patio curves to follow the line of the retaining wall.  A set of steps leads there, up onto the next level of the garden.

The upper terrace of the garden features a broad, sweeping path that curves away to the left.  Visitors are led through beautiful planting towards a feature sculpture. Carefully positioned along the path is a simple bench with views across the mountains and back down towards the patio. This spot receives the morning sun, making it an ideal place enjoy the first coffee of the day.

Carefully chosen trees will help the garden to feel part of the wider landscape and give a sense of intimacy.

Finally, to the right hand side of the garden, and conveniently placed for the back gate, is a storage area.  This has a slightly raised area of decking with drainage beneath and is ideal for storing bins and bikes.

About The Garden Designer

This garden design was created by one of the team of over 20 freelance garden designers working with My Garden Design.

My Garden Design is an online garden design company exclusively for landscapers. Our business has been structured so that no landscaper need wait more than four weeks for a garden design to be created.  Our clients – ie landscapers like you – gather all of the necessary information for the design brief. Usually whilst making their consultation visit. From the householder’s point of view, it means that the entire design and build process is smooth and efficient.  They only have one point of contact (the landscaper). And they can be confident that they will be able to visualise the end product before the work begins.

Working with My Garden Design is easy and fluent. Which is why we have so many repeat customers!
